Handcare and Dermatitis Prevention and Control

Employers have a duty of care under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (2002) and also the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations (1999) to prevent employees coming into contact with substances hazardous to health.  If it is not practical to prevent your employees coming into contact with these substances, you must do what you can to control that exposure and provide the necessary safety equipment including cleaning products.

Employees have a legal duty to cooperate with employers on Health and Safety matters.  You must take good care of your own health and use the equipment that your employer provides to protect you and also to inform your manager if that equipment is faulty.

In some jobs, little can be done to prevent exposure but you can do a lot yourself to  prevent things like dermatitis by protecting yourself

  • Wear correct gloves to prevent splashes onto hands and wash or change the gloves regularly.
  • Use Barrier Creams before starting work and regularly re-apply during the day
  • Use moisturising Creams after cleaning hands.  This will help re-moisturise your skin after the use of cleaners and contact with solvents.  Or use cleaners with built in moisturisers

Keep your skin clean by regularly washing off dirt and grime.
